Old Bank Arcade Wellington interior architecture New Zealand design

I am down in Wellington visiting one of my favourite little malls: Old Bank Arcade. I am a sucker for beautiful floor tiles and love the richness they add to this space.

This is such a great floor and I am the guy who installed it, with one apprentice at the time.

The tiles were originally from at least two separate sections which were installed in two different time frames, we could tell this as there were at least two different tile sizes, one more metric and one more imperial. Also the patterns on the bottom of the tiles were not matching. All the tiles were removed, acid cleaned and alkaline neutralized before being soaked in fresh water for weeks.

Due to the size difference, tile thickness variations and the amount of missing tiles, we only installed up to two square meters per day, in the end the floor took almost nine months to complete.

I’m pleased people enjoy the work as it is a legacy piece for a tradesman.

    Many thanks for your blog

    Jason,
It is so good to hear from you!
And fantastic to hear the backstory behind these stunning tiles – I really appreciate you sharing this.

    What a legacy indeed!

My daughter is visiting Wellington and was amazed to see this tiled floor . It is identical to our hallway here in a South Cambridgeshire village Manor !
I have seen many floors like this but not laid to this exact pattern and such a large area. Part of ours was recently renovated so we can really appreciate the skill required to conserve protect & re lay the tiles Jason. Our tiles had been laid on to 16century floor boards which had rotted. The tiles are of such varying thickness it’s a very time consuming technical job to lay them back , amazing to see a match literally the other side of the world !!

    A small world !
    Best wishes

    Sarah
